English Proficiency Requirements

To be considered for admission, an international student whose native language (or language of instruction) is not English must present a minimum score of 500 paper base on an International Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), or 61 on the internet version TOEFL iBT before they can be admitted to San Diego City College. An admissions decision cannot be made without this proof. The English Proficiency Exam score must be valid within the past two years. Institutional reports or photocopies will not be accepted, our institution code 4681.

Students may petition to waive the TOEFL requirement under one of the following conditions:

  • Completion of a transfer level college composition course at an accredited United Statesinstitution with a grade of “C” or higher;
  • A minimum ACT verbal score of 22 or SAT English score of 550.
