Knights Shutout Compton 2-0 For 1st Win of 2017
The San Diego City College baseball team earned its first victory of the new season with a 2-0 home shutout of Compton on Saturday. The Knights improved to 1-3 after dropping the first three games of the season to the Saddleback Gauchos, who are ranked No. 2 in Southern California, and the Long Beach Vikings, who are ranked No. 15 in Southern California.
Knights's starting pitcher Neil Evans left the game with an injury while facing the second batter of the game, but Ryan Darrah came in and pitched wonderfully for the Knights.
Darrah, in his second appearance of the season, allowed only three hits while walking three others in eight innings as he earned his first win.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning when Knights' first baseman Cesar Fitch hit a 1-out triple to center field. Fitch then put the Knights ahead by scoring the first run on a wild pitch during Wyatt Logan's at bat.
Anthony Warneke led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a double and then advanced to third on Calvin Gourson's single. Fitch came up next and hit a sacrifice fly that brought Warneke in to give the Knights an insurance run.
Darrah got into some trouble in the top of the ninth inning when he gave up a 1-out double. Troy Liebesman relieved Darrah and gave up a walk to put runners at the corners with two out, but he struck out Compton's Richard Samudio for the final out and earned the save. Box Score
