Tolhurst Strikes Out 10 in 8-4 Win Over Grossmont

4/21/2018

Anders Tolhurst pitched his first complete game of the season in an 8-4 victory over Grossmont on Saturday, City's second win over the Griffins this week. Tolhurst recorded 10 strikeouts in his sixth win as the Knights improved to 19-17 overall and 11-10 in the PCAC.

Tolhurst, who is 4th in the state in total strikeouts with 91 (2 behind teammate Jake Lipetzky), fell behind early as he gave up a run in the top of the 1st. The Knights answered back in the bottom of the 1st when Cesar Fitch's 2-RBI double put the Knights ahead, 2-1.

Matt Bagdasar hit an RBI single in the 2nd inning to give Tolhurst and the Knights a 3-1 lead.

Grossmont got back within one after scoring a run in the top of the 4th, but the Knights came right back with two runs in the 5th and one more in the 6th to take a 6-2 lead.

Jonathon Sandberg's double in the 5th brought in City's a run and Carlos Cosio followed with an RBI-single to score Sandberg. Then in the 6th, Sandberg's triple added another run for the Knights.

The Griffins scored a run off a passed ball in the 7th and another in the 8th off a Courtney Morgan triple to cut City's lead down to 6-4, but the Knights answered back once again.

With the bases loaded, Cosio came up big with a double down the left field line that scored two insurance runs.

Then Tolhurst closed the game out by retiring the side with a fly out and two ground outs in the 9th. Saturday marked the third time this season that he has recorded at least 10 strikeouts.

The Knights have won two in a row and four of their last five. Their 19 wins are the most since 2010 when they won 26 games en route to a conference title.

They will wrap up the PCAC season with a 3-game series against Southwestern (23-14, 12-9 PCAC). The Knights will play two of those games at home beginning with Tuesday's game, which is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Morley Field. They will play at Southwestern on Thursday before coming back to Morley on Friday at 2 p.m.
