Knights Begin PCAC Play at Home Against Cuyamaca

The San Diego City College men’s basketball team will begin the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference South season at home on Friday, January 12 at 6 p.m. against Cuyamaca College at Harry West Gymnasium.

The defending state champion Knights come into the conference opener riding a 12-game win streak. They are currently ranked No. 2 in the state with a 19-2 record, which is the best mark after 21 games in team history.

City’s two losses this season have come at the hands of No. 4 Fullerton and No. 9 Citrus by a combined three points.

The Knights have gone undefeated in the PCAC South the previous two seasons with an 18-0 record. They are 32-2 over the last four seasons, which also includes another undefeated (8-0) season in 2014.

San Diego City College is being led by sophomores Wonder Smith and Robert McCoy. Smith is averaging 17.7 points, 4.4 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 1.7 steals, while McCoy is providing 16.6 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks. Both were part of last year’s state championship team along with sophomores Robert Taylor (9.8 ppg) and Darius Lee (6.6 ppg).

In addition to the first-ever state championship for the Knights, Head Coach Mitch Charlens has led San Diego City to six PCAC titles (2005, 2009, 2012, 2014, 2016, 2017) since taking the helm in 2004 and has reached the 20-win mark six times, including five of the last six seasons.
