Lamar Scores 30 In 84-71 Win Over Palomar

    1/4/2012

Sophomore guard Stephon Lamar poured in 30 points on 10-of-19 shooting to lead the Knights to an 84-71 victory over visiting Palomar.

Sophomore forward Menas Stephens put in 15 points, brought down a game-high 14 rebounds and had six steals in the win.

The game was close throughout as evidenced by the 21 lead changes and 13 ties. With 9:27 remaining and the scored tied at 60-60, Bren Haley and Lamar hit back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Knights their largest lead up until that point. The Palomar Comets, however, closed the gap to 68-67 after a layup by Drew Allen.

A few moments later with 4:12 left, a fast break dunk by freshman forward Kyle Anderson sparked a 13-0 run over the next 2:58 that gave City an 81-67 lead.  Four Comet turnovers led to four fast break layups by Lamar during that run. The other three points came off free throws by Jordan Taylor (2) and Stephens (1).

The Knights would hold off the Comets over the final 1:12 and came away with their sixth win in the last seven games and improved to 11-5 overall and 5-0 in the PCAC, good for sole possession of first place in conference.
