Knights' Rally Falls Short in 71-62 Loss to SWC
2/10/2012
The No. 12 Knights came into Friday's game looking to clinch at least a share of the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference title, but they suffered a setback as they fell to Southwestern, 71-62.
Marvin Sykes led the Knights with 19 points, four rebounds, four assists and five steals while Stephon Lamar added 15 points.
The Knights' only lead came after scoring the first hoop of the game, a 3-pointer by Devyn Iglehart. City's poor shooting Friday night did them no favors. In the first half the Knights made only 7-of-34 shots (20.6 percent) and fell behind by as many as 10 points.
City cut the deficit to 44-43 early in the second half after a fast break layup by Lamar, but Southwestern pushed their lead back up to 51-43 after seven straight points by Derrick Thompson.
The Knights rallied back to within one point with 9:03 left and had chances to take the lead, but could not do it. Southwestern extended its lead once again and did not let the Knights get any closer than three points the rest of the game.
City's shooting improved in the second half, but not enough to help them win. They shot 33.3 percent (11-of-33) in the second half and 26.9 percent (18-of-67) for the game.
Even with the loss, the Knights (18-7, 12-2 PCAC) remain atop the PCAC standings with a one game lead over Imperial Valley whom they play on Wednesday. The Knights can clinch at least a share of the PCAC title with one more win in their last two games. They can take the title outright with two wins. City's season finale will be at home next Friday against Mira Costa.
