Knights Clinch PCAC Title, Beat IVC 86-79

    2/15/2012

For the third time under head coach Mitch Charlens' tenure, the Knights (19-7, 13-2 PCAC) have won the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference championship. The Knights clinched the title after holding off the Imperial Valley Arabs (19-7, 11-4 PCAC), 86-79, on Wednesday night at IVC.

This is the first time since the 2008-09 season that the Knights have won the conference title. That season, the Knights had their best season ever as they advanced to the quarterfinals of the state championships. Charlens also led his Knights to the conference title in the 2004-05, his first season at San Diego City.

Darin Martin and Stephon Lamar led the Knights with 19 points a piece. Lamar did most of his damage in the first half by scoring 12 points, including two 3-pointers, and dishing out five of his game-high six assists.

Jordan Taylor scored all 11 of his points, including three 3-pointers, in the first half to help the Knights build a 44-30 halftime lead. City used a 7-0 run to close out the half and Marvin Sykes scored on consecutive layups to start the second half to push the Knights lead to 48-30.

Imperial Valley, led by Brandon Newman's game-high 25 points, chipped away at City's lead and forced their way back into the game. The Arabs cut it to 61-56 with 6:54 left, but Martin, who exploded for 15 second half points, scored consecutive layups to get the Knights' lead back up to nine. The Arabs, however, did not go quietly and got as close as 69-65 with 4:31 left after a 3-pointer by Alexander.

Martin then got fouled on the next possession and hit two free throws. Marvin Sykes hit an 18-foot jumper and Lamar made a fast break layup after a steal by Martin to create a 75-65 cushion. The Knights held the Arabs off for the final 2:42 and won, 86-79.

The Knights have one more regular season game left which is a home game against Mira Costa on Friday, Feb. 17 at 5 p.m. The postseason will begin the following week with dates and times to be determined.
