2/20/2012
Not only did the 2011-12 Knights win the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference championship, but they also received several individual accolades. Head Coach Mitch Charlens was named Coach of the Year, Stephon Lamar was named Player of the Year and Menas Stephens and Marvin Sykes were named to the All-PCAC 1st Team.
This is the second time since being at SDCC that Charlens has been awarded PCAC Mens' Basketball Coach of the Year. It is also the third time that he has led the Knights to the conference title and he couldn't be prouder of his team's achievement.
"Winning the conference championship is the ultimate validation for all of us athletes and coaches," said Charlens. This is such a wonderful team. I haven't experienced the closeness this team has developed. I have enjoyed working with this team so much and I'm sure none of us want this to end. Winning the third championship of my time here at City solidifies our place as a great program year after year."
Charlens' Knights had previously won the PCAC championship in 2008-09 and in 2004-05.
Sophomore guard Stephon Lamar has become the second Knight in the last four years to win PCAC Player of the Year honors. The other was Malcolm Thomas in 2008-09.
Lamar led the conference in scoring by averaging 22.6 points. He also averaged 3.4 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 2.3 steals.
Menas Stephens and Marvin Sykes were named to the All-PCAC 1st Team along with Lamar. Stephens averaged 12.8 points, 9.7 rebounds and 1.5 blocks. Sykes averaged 14.6 points and 3.6 rebounds for the Knights.
Jordan Taylor and Darin Martin were given Honorable Mention.
