Knights Open PCAC Season With 77-49 Win Over Mesa


The San Diego City College women's basketball team started its defense of the PCAC South title with a much-needed 77-49 home victory over Mesa on Wednesday. A season-high six Knights scored in double figures, including freshman forward Mariah Wonders who put in a team-high 15 points and 12 rebounds. 

Angeleah Johnson had a season-high 13 points along with six rebounds. Breeana Gafare recorded 12 points, 12 rebounds, six assists, and six steals in the win. 

Off the bench, Elliot Nixon provided 11 points and Kiley Pope added 10 points with 11 rebounds, eight of which were offensive. 

The Knights were down a point late in the first quarter when they took the lead for good with a 10-0 run. City went into the locker room with a 37-22 halftime lead and then kept adding to it in the second half. 

The Knights were up 22 points after the third quarter and that lead grew to as many as 29 midway through the fourth. 

It was City's largest win since February 3, 2017 when they defeated Mesa, 75-45. 

The Knights improved to 4-13 overall and 1-0 in the PCAC South. They will head to Imperial Valley on Friday for a game set for 5 p.m.
