Knights Win Colbert Classic For 2nd Straight Year

12/15/2013

The SDCC women's basketball team won the Knights' Colbert Classic championship for a second consecutive year after holding off Glendale, 64-56, in the title game. Freshman center Alex Warren was named tournament MVP after leading the Knights with 28 points, 24 rebounds, and six blocks. Melanie San Nicolas added 17 points, including 4-of-6 from beyond the three-point line, and was selected to the All-Tournament team along with Warren.

The Knights, who had edged West Hills-Lemoore in dramatic fashion a day earlier, jumped out to an 18-6 lead midway through the first half and extended that lead over Glendale to 34-16 at the half. Warren had an impressive 15 points and 14 rebounds in 19 minutes while San Nicolas added 10 points.

SDCC maintained a double-digit lead for most of the second half, but Glendale made a late push to get back in the game. The Vaqueros went on a 11-3 run late in the second half to cut the Knights' lead to 58-52 with 1:44 remaining. The Knights weren't able to score on their next three possessions, but they made four straight defensive stops over the next 1:37 to hold Glendale off. The Knights made 4-of-5 free throws in the final seconds to secure the win and the tournament championship.
