Knights Win Season Opener, 1-0, Over Saddleback

The Knights opened the 2012 season at home on Tuesday afternoon and came away with a hard earned 1-0 victory over the Saddleback Gauchos. It was the first time since 2008 that the Knights started the season with a win.

The lone goal came in the 18th minute after a foul near the top of the 18-yard box. Freshman midfielder Thelma Navarro took the free kick which bounced in front of the net. Saddleback's goalkeeper could not keep a handle on the ball and went in for the goal.

SDCC's goalkeeper Erica Inchaurregui was stellar for the Knights as she recorded 13 saves in the shutout and covered up many other balls that were sent in her direction. Although Inchaurregui had a busy afternoon, the Knights' back line performed solidly to prevent several Saddleback opportunities from becoming scoring chances.

The Gauchos, however, came on strong in the final 10 minutes and had two great chances at goals, but both shots caromed off the crossbar. The Knights held on and preserved the 1-0 victory.
