Brandon Lupian Named Wilson/ITA Coach of the Year

Men's tennis Head Coach Brandon Lupian was named Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Coach of the Year on Wednesday in Ojai, Calif. at the annual state banquet. It is the first time he has received the award and it comes less than two weeks after being named Pacific Coast Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Coach of the Year.

"Not in my wildest dreams did I ever think I would get this award as the names of the nominees were called," said Lupian. "When I heard my name, I told myself that all of us deserve this award and as I walked up to the podium and overlooked the crowd, I told myself that every coach in this room deserves this award. I'm very thankful and appreciative, and I love both our men and women's tennis teams."

Lupian, who has coached the Knights for 11 seasons, led the team to its best season since taking over in 2007.

The 2017 Knights won the PCAC championship after going undefeated (12-0) in conference and qualified for the playoffs. The Knights went 13-5 overall, their most wins under Lupian and the second consecutive season with at least 10 wins.

Other accolades for the Knights included sophomore No. 1 Daniel Villa Rosas being selected to the All-PCAC team and sophomore Shane Griffin chosen for the All-PCAC Sportsmanship team.

At the state tournament in Ojai, Villa Rosas and Ivan Martinez won their first round singles matches, as did the doubles teams of Villa Rosas/Jacques Desmet and Martinez/Jose Ruiz.
