Historically Black Colleges and Universities

HBCU Woman Graduate posting on steps

Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) have been a cornerstone of Black education and achievement for nearly two centuries. Founded during a time of segregation and limited access to higher education, HBCUs continue to provide opportunities for Black students and others seeking a supportive, culturally rich learning environment.

HBCUs have produced leaders and trailblazers across every industry. Oprah Winfrey, a media mogul and philanthropist, is a proud graduate of Tennessee State University. Civil rights leader and U.S. Representative John Lewis studied at Fisk University, and former Vice President Kamala Harris earned one of her degrees from Howard University. HBCU's have been a launching pad for excellence, community, and legacy.

Did you know that you can get guaranteed admission into more than 30 Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCUs) through the CCC to HBCU Transfer Project?

The objective of the California Community Colleges Transfer Guarantee to HBCU's Program is the development of transfer pathways that will facilitate a smooth transition for students from all of the California Community Colleges to partnered HBCU's. These pathways will simplify the transfer process and reduce students’ need to take unnecessary courses, thereby shortening the time to degree completion and saving student costs.
