ASG President Dalia Ramirez: A Journey of Resilience and Advocacy

September 04, 2024

Dalia Ramirez, the newly elected Associated Student Government (ASG) president at San Diego City College, is focused on transforming the student experience through her dedication to inclusivity and community support. A Chicana from Logan Heights, Ramirez's journey from a challenging upbringing to student leadership highlights her resilience and advocacy.

Ramirez, who was born and raised in San Diego, has been profoundly shaped by her early experiences. “I’m just a Hispanic girl from Logan Heights,” she said. Her father’s deportation when she was seven left Ramirez, her mother, and her younger brother to navigate life together. This experience instilled in her a strong work ethic and a commitment to supporting others. “I want my little brother and cousins to be protected, and I aim to bring love and support to every community,” Ramirez added.

At San Diego City College, Ramirez has pursued political science and journalism, driven by a desire to advocate for underrepresented communities. “I’m the first in my family to access these educational resources,” she noted. “I recognize the privilege of being here and want to make it easier for others, especially those from trans-border backgrounds who face unique challenges.”

Ramirez’s decision to run for ASG President was motivated by her goal to address student needs and enhance campus life. “I didn’t initially know what ASG was, but when I saw the opportunities to make a difference, I was inspired to get involved,” she said. Her leadership vision includes improving funding transparency and supporting student organizations to ensure they receive the resources they need to succeed.

Looking forward, Ramirez plans to use her platform to advocate for Hispanic and first-generation students. “Being exposed to different economic realities has given me a unique perspective,” she reflected. “I want to create pathways for students facing similar challenges and advocate for systemic changes that support their success.”

One of Ramirez’s key initiatives involves improving access to basic needs, such as eyewear. “I’ve been thinking about setting up a program to provide free glasses to students in need,” she shared. This initiative reflects her commitment to addressing practical challenges students face. Ramirez also aims to enhance student engagement and community by ensuring reliable support services.

Diversity and inclusion remain central to Ramirez’s agenda. She plans to advocate for policies that promote affordability and accessibility in education, drawing on her experience as an intern with the American Federation of Teachers (AFT). “I want to continue lobbying for affordable education and work with our advisors to develop effective resolutions,” Ramirez said.

In her role, Ramirez remains dedicated to listening to students and advocating for their needs. “Thank you for choosing me as your ASG President,” she said. “I’m here to support you and work together to make our college experience better for everyone.”

Outside of her ASG duties, Ramirez enjoys relaxing by the beach and spending time with family, emphasizing the importance of mental health and finding moments of peace. Her journey and leadership reflect a deep commitment to enhancing student life and advocating for systemic change at San Diego City College.
