Collin Austin, better known by his stage name ‘Semie’, is a dedicated music student at San Diego City College who has been making waves with his unique musical style and passion for learning. Semie shared insights into his journey and experiences as a musician.
"I kind of always had an affinity to music," Semie said. "Since I was about eight or nine years old, anytime I saw an instrument, I wanted to play it or learn more about it."
Semie's path to music wasn't straightforward. Growing up in various environments that didn't necessarily cater to his musical interests, it took time for him to fully immerse himself in learning about music. Despite these challenges, his passion for music never waned.
"I actually started here with a computer science degree," Semie explained. "Then I switched to music because I realized that if I were going to college to learn something, it should be what I really wanted to learn."
Semie's musical journey began at the age of 15 when he learned to use digital audio software and started making beats. His style, which he describes as "slow core, sad core," is introspective and laid-back.
When asked about his biggest musical influences, Semie mentioned bands like Linkin Park, Nirvana, and Duster. "There are a lot of influences," he said. "It's a difficult question because I have a lot of influences from different places."
Semie credits his time at San Diego City College for significantly shaping his growth as a musician. "I went from knowing nothing to knowing the fundamentals of how to put a track together and mix it," he said. "Now, I'm confident in my productions."
In addition to his music studies, Semie is also pursuing a philosophy degree. He believes that understanding people and their thought patterns plays into his music. "Music is all about expressing your thoughts clearly to multiple people," he said. "If you don't understand how people think, you won't be able to communicate effectively through music."
Balancing academics with musical practice has been manageable for Semie. "Academics have always come easy to me," he said. "It's something that never really got in the way."
Reflecting on his most memorable experiences, Semie highlighted the Soundsation showcase, which featured the first compilation of student works. "Being part of the first and second compilations has given me an idea of what to expect and how to be prepared," he said. "I'm really proud of what we did with those compilations."
Semie prefers to let creativity strike naturally rather than forcing it. "It's pretty hard to force yourself into a realm that you don't want to be in until you want to be there," he said. He uses an Ableton Move controller to sketch out musical ideas and often starts with rhythms before adding lyrics.
Motivation for Semie comes from the moment rather than a set schedule. "I try to make music for just the moment," he said. Playing the guitar helps him get into the creative zone, and he doesn't need a specific environment to create music. "I have two kids, so I'm used to working in a louder environment," he added.
Interestingly, his children sometimes become part of his creative process. "The other day, I was sampling a sound, and my daughter made a noise in the background. I ended up using it in the track," he shared.
Semie is open to collaborations, especially in genres like hip-hop. "I haven't collaborated with anyone yet, but I would definitely work with people looking for that kind of thing," he said. His music has been featured in the Spring Electro-Acoustic compilation live streams, and he hopes to share it with more people in the future.
Through his music, Semie aims to convey a message of perseverance. "Life can really get you in some dark corners," he said. "It helps to stay on track and keep going at what you want to do."
Beyond his kids and family, Semie's biggest motivation is music itself. "I love music so much that I not only want to be part of the culture but also watch it evolve," he said. "Seeing different artists with different approaches is motivating."
Semie's goals for the future include graduating with degrees in digital music technology and philosophy, working on an album, and possibly pursuing a record label position. He also sees himself helping other artists achieve their goals.
As Semie prepares for graduation, he looks forward to continuing his musical journey and exploring new opportunities. His dedication and passion for music are sure to lead him to new heights.
