About the Program

 

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) is hosted at UCSD and sponsored by the SD IRACDA program. It is an 8-week, full-time, mentored research internship in Biomedical Sciences specifically for San Diego City College Students. The SD IRACDA program aims to diversify participation in sciences so students from diverse, underserved, or underrepresented populations are highly encouraged to apply.

What should you expect from the IRACDA SURF program?

Mentored research internship at UCSD within the broad field of biomedical sciences that includes the following:

  • Participation in  ~40 hours of program activities per week for 8 weeks; typically during business hours Monday through Friday 
  • Engagement in 6-8 hours of enriching and challenging laboratory research each day 
  • Participation in weekly professional development and community building to develop your professional skills and network
  • Present research at the SURF Undergraduate Research Symposium
  • Receive a stipend of $5000 
  • Earn eligibility for $350 to cover meeting registration upon receipt of a national conference travel award

Why should you apply for the IRACDA SURF program? 

  • You are a San Diego City College student who wants an authentic research experience in biomedical sciences and mentoring with an IRACDA postdoctoral fellow
  • You want to build professional skills through workshops and journal clubs
  • You want to improve your science communication by presenting research at the SURF Undergraduate Research Symposium
  • You are an undergraduate majoring in Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry or related fields. Students majoring in other STEM disciplines should have an interest in Biomedical Research
  • Students from groups that will broaden demographics and participation in biomedical sciences are strongly encouraged to apply

  • Your answers to four essay questions about your interests, motivations, and experiences.
