A Special Message From Our ASG President

 

Welcome to San Diego City College! My name is Jesse Lopez, and I am the newly elected ASG (Associated Students Government) President and Student Trustee for San Diego City College. I am currently a Legal Fellow with the International Rescue Committee (IRC) and a mentee through UC Berkeley. I aspire to become an attorney specializing in congressional and corporate law. I am majoring in Political Science and hope to transfer to a four-year university, as this is my final year at San Diego City College.

Coming to San Diego City College marked a turning point in my life. Before enrolling, I was unsure of what my future would look like and struggled to see a clear path for myself after high school. Through the challenges I faced, I learned the importance of perseverance and the power of creating opportunities for yourself. At City College, I found more than just an education; I found a community that allowed me to grow academically, personally, and as a leader. Becoming involved in ASG gave me the opportunity to turn my own experiences into advocacy and help ensure that students feel heard, supported, and empowered to shape their own college experience.

My ASG journey began as Scholarship Officer, where I expanded City College's scholarship program by creating eight new inclusive scholarship opportunities to increase student access to financial support for our diverse student community. I later served as Government Affairs Officer and City College's voting delegate to the Student Senate for California Community Colleges (SSCCC), advocating for students and representing the college at the statewide level. These experiences strengthened my leadership, advocacy, and collaboration skills while reinforcing the importance of teamwork and student engagement. I look forward to using these experiences to help create an exceptional year filled with meaningful advocacy, memorable experiences, and a strong sense of community.

San Diego City College ASG is an amazing place where students can learn more about the policies shaping our campus and become involved in their college community. Through ASG, students can discover their potential, develop their leadership skills, and learn how to advocate while serving our student body. Joining ASG is one of the best decisions I have made while pursuing my associate degree. I believe student leadership is an integral part of the college community because it allows us to engage with one another and enhance the student experience.

As ASG President, I plan to focus on community engagement, creating resolutions, and building a welcoming environment for all students. Students should always feel confident in their right to voice their concerns and know that they will be heard. I want to create and collaborate on community-building events and activities that motivate students to pursue their academic and career goals while also having fun.

I look forward to all the possibilities ahead and personally invite you to discover ASG and consider becoming an essential part of our campus community, where every student’s voice matters. Please join us at our weekly meetings every Wednesday from 1:00–2:30 p.m. in M-201 during the spring and fall semesters. I hope to see you there!

The Associated Students Government (ASG) is the governing body that finances, organizes, and directs many student sponsored programs and activities at City College. Elections are held annually in the Spring semester for ASG Executive, Officer and Senator positions.

Associated Students Membership
